What Happens to Your Frequent Flyer Miles When You Die?

When people think about estate planning, they usually picture homes, bank accounts, and life insurance. But in today’s digital world, your airline miles, hotel points, and credit card rewards can be surprisingly valuable. So what happens to all those rewards when you pass away?

It Depends on the Program
Every rewards program has its own rules—and the fine print matters. Some airlines and credit card companies allow points or miles to be transferred after death, either to a surviving spouse or the executor of your estate. Others have strict policies that make rewards non-transferable, meaning your hard-earned points could vanish the moment you’re gone.
How to Protect Your Points
To avoid losing those valuable benefits, take proactive steps now:
Check the Terms: Review each program’s policy on death and transfers.
Name a Beneficiary: If the program allows, designate someone to receive your rewards.
Include Them in Your Plan: Mention your rewards accounts in your will or trust. While they may not always be legally binding for the program, doing so gives your loved ones a clear path to follow.
Keep a Master List: Document all your loyalty accounts and login info (in a secure place) so your executor knows what you have.
